One of the most famous attractions outside Stavanger is Preikestolen (the Pulpit Rock). This is a mountain shelf which steeps into the fjord over 600 meters below. The shelf itself is almost completely flat an has a size of about 25x25 meters. Over 300.000 visit each year. You may have seen it in the movie Mission Impossible 6, where Tom Cruise and his counterpart towards the end of the movie are hanging outside with helicopter wrecks around them - where the shelf is acting as a place somewhere in Asia. To reach Preikestolen from Stavanger, the easiest route is through the impressive underwater Ryfast tunnel by car or bus. It is possible to park your car at Preikestolhytta - a tourist cabin by the foot of the route, but it costs NOK 250. From the tourist office, it is possible to buy guided tours to Preikestolen where transport is included. Have in mind that you have to be in rather good shape to hike up to Preikestolen and you need decent hiking shoes, warm clothes (even in summer) and enough food and water to drink. The trip takes about 4-6 hours (up and down) and is about 8 km (in total, both ways) in different but rather steep terrain. There is a section in the middle of the route with huge slippery stones you have to climb, which is hard for the ankles. There has been done a lot ow work here the last few years, so the route is now easier. You also have to conquer about 350 altimeters. But the reward is an amazing view …
