In Hafrsfjord, right outside Stavanger, you will find one of Norway´s most famous landmarks, the monument «Sverd i stein» - or «Swords in Rock» in English. The monument marks the spot where Norway alledgedly was gathered into one kingdom, under one crown in year 872 by the king Harald Hårfagre during the Battle of Hafrsfjord». The three swords are typical Viking swords, where the largest is 9,2 meters high. The largest sword represent the battle´s «winner», Harald Hårfagre. The others represent the two defeated kings. Fritz Røed, the artist behind the monument, also created a tribute to peace, since the swords are planted so hard into the rock that they never may be removed again. Today, Hafrsfjord is a popular recreational area with walking paths and a popular beach. The easiest way to visit the swords is by car. There is a parking area close by.
